What to Expect at CFHC and Frequently Asked Questions

What Can you Expect at our Chiropractic Family Health Centre?

Everyone at CFHC believes in the team approach, and YOU are an integral member of the team. Beginning with your first appointment, we will listen as you describe your condition, express your concerns and ask any questions. We will answer these questions and based on your needs, we may want to use some diagnostic imaging (x-ray) of your spine. Why would we insist on an x-ray? This is a sure method for us to assist in your diagnosis and determine whether or not we can help you. (A note about our x-ray equipment: it is up-to-date, high-speed, hospital quality.).

We will ask that you attend a brief Wednesday evening Doctor's Report, after which one of the doctors will review your x-rays with you. Your treatment recommendations will be discussed. This includes regularly scheduled appointments. Once you have had a series of adjustments, we will recommend a maintenance plan. Important: If at any point during your treatment you have any questions or have concerns about how well you are progressing, please give us a call at 703-222-3737 or contact us to send an email. Our assistants are trained to answer your questions, and if you would prefer to speak to one of us personally, please leave us your name and number. We will call you as soon as possible. We do not charge for telephone consultations.

What are the three stages of Chiropractic Care?

1. INITIAL INTENSIVE CARE: This is where most patients start. If pain or other obvious symptom has prompted you to seek Chiropractic Care, you are most interested in FEELING BETTER. Treatment visits are usually frequent to reduce or eliminate symptoms.

2. REHABILITATIVE CARE: This is a period where you can stabilize your spine and promote more complete healing. This stage usually begins when your most obvious symptoms have subsided. Even though you are usually feeling better, muscle and other soft tissue damage often remain. Please, do not get impatient with your healing process and let up on the treatment plan your doctor has prescribed. Exercises are often recommended at this time.

3. MAINTENANCE CARE: After optimum spinal function is reached (which can be shown in x-rays), only regular check-ups or appointments are prescribed. This is recommended highly (OUR GOAL IN THE OFFICE IS TO HELP YOU GET TO THIS STAGE) to help preserve and maintain your progress! This is a preventive health measure...saving time and money for you.

What is the Doctors Report of Films (ROF)

This appointment is crucial for you to understand about your care at CFHC. Why? By understanding the principles of Chiropractic, you will more easily accept the treatment plan designed for you to get the optimum benefit of your care. We would be remiss in our care for you if we could not help you understand the importance of your care as we see it. Because we feel so strongly about this, we conduct a chiropractic orientation for new patients every Monday at 7:30 PM.

Please bring your spouse or significant other so they too may understand the care that will be given to you. It will be brief...but please allow about one hour to an hour and a half. This is a Chiropractic Family Health Centre. We believe in families and children...but at this time ONLY, we ask that you not bring small children with you...they would become bored.

How can Chiropractic Care Help Me as an Athlete?

Chiropractic can give your athletic endeavors an edge. That's why you'll find chiropractors as team doctors for professional, college, and high school teams for sports ranging from wrestling and track to dance and gymnastics. Chiropractic has been used by champions like Lance Armstrong of cycling as well as Martina Navratilova and Jon McEnroe of tennis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger of Body Building. Emmitt Smith, the NFL's all time rushing yardage record holder had a chiropractor for much of his career and attests that regular chiropractic care was an important part of his success!

Many amateur and professional athletes wouldn't dream of competing without getting a chiropractic spinal check-up. That's why 75 percent of the San Francisco 49ers received chiropractic care the day they played and won the 1990 super bowl and that's why 16 chiropractors were present at the last olympics. How about you? Want that winning edge, a little more balance, a littler more lightness to your step? Try a chiropractic "shaping up" adjustment of the spine.

Sports Injuries Sports injuries nearly always jar and misalign the spinal column. A blow the the ribs, legs, feet, head, shoulder, or torso will always radiate to the center of the body. That's why a chiropractic check-up is needed when you are injured, regardless of the nature of the injury. Medical doctors are simply not trained to located and correct spinal nerve stress -- that is the realm of the doctor of chiropractic.

Before deciding whether to undergo surgery, if at all possible, it's best to explore chiropractic and natural methods. As superstar Joe Montana stated "If only I had tried chiropractic care a few years earlier then maybe this surgery would have never happened!" Evander Holyfield echoes this attitude of many world famous athletes stating, "Once i drove over 20 miles to see a chiropractor before a fight. I have to have my adjustment before I go in to the ring." How about you?

What Causes Migraines and Headaches?

Sooner or later nearly everyone gets a headache, but to about 20 percent of us they are chronic or recurrent. What causes headache? Lots of things: strong smells, bright lights, poor vision, dental and ear problems, fevers, cold drinks, infections, tumors, carbon monoxide, trauma, drug side-effects, or withdrawal, and lumbar punctures among others. What puts the "ache" in headache? Surprisingly, a headache is not a "brain ache." The brain, most of its membranes, and the skull feel no pain at all. That is why during brain surgery patients can be wide awake even talking to the doctors while their brains are being cut or probed with local anesthetic is used to numb the scalp. However, when the pain sensitive parts, the arteries of the brain and skull, the dura mater that covers the brain and the cranial nerves are infected, pulled, inflamed, stretched, compressed, or irritated headaches usually result.

Treating Headaches The treatment for a headache depends of course, on its cause. For example, a headache arising from visual problems can often be cured by eyeglasses; a headache caused by a sinus or ear infection will be relieved when the infection resolves. But the most common headaches, including migraine, are usually treated with painkillers or other drugs.

Although chiropractic is not a headache therapy, for over a hundred years, headache sufferers have turned to the drug-free natural methods used by their neighborhood chiropractors. By eliminating spinal nerve stress, chiropractic permits the entire body to restore itself to a greater level of health and wholeness -- in effect, to heal itself. Chiropractic spinal care is essential for anyone who suffers from headaches.

How Do You Help Whiplash and Neck Problems?

The neck is jam-packed with nerves, glands, tubes, blood and lymph vessels, and 9 different joints, plus the brain stem, spinal chord spinal column, muscles, ligaments, tendons, fluids, meninges, and more! It also balances your heavy head! Whiplash occurs when the head and neck are thrown or snapped back and forth very quickly. It can occur in auto accidents, football, boxing, or from a fall. In addition to the disc and other soft tissue damage, whiplash causes spinal column to misalign causing irritation, stretching, or impingement to the nerves and spinal chord. About 20 million people in the United States have suffered from whiplash damage. Other neck problems can be caused by poor posture, work habits, and even birth trauma. Neck problems and whiplash can cause headaches, numbness, coldness, or pins-and-needles in the face, chest, arms, wrists, or hands. Neck problems also result from anxiety, insomnia, low-back and neck pain, ear ringing, dizziness, hearing loss, eye pain, blurred vision, sensitivity to light, and other symptoms. Of course, in an accident, the first order of business is to attend to any life-threatening problems. After that, the spine must be attended to. Chiropractic has been a blessing to millions of people suffering from neck and whiplash problems; saving many sufferers from unnecessary drugs and surgery.
